Day 20: Jupiter Artland - Scotland

Updated: Nov 30, 2019

After finally being back from our crazy trip in London, we thankfully got to sleep in a bit as we had no class that following Monday and went on another field trip instead. Only this time around we visited an outdoor art museum - Jupiter Artland. This place is as fun and magical as it sounds in the name. It also made my top favorite art museum we visited on the whole trip.

If you are from Minnesota and are familiar with the Stillwater area, Jupiter Artland is like Franconia. An outdoor sculpture park with unique sculpture and takes you into different world as you walk around the estate. They also both like to use local artists and we all love supporting them.

There was around thirty different sculptures we could visit during our time there and some of the artists (like Andy Goldsworhty) who we learned about in our class among others were featured in this park. So that made me even more excited to check out what he had made for them. It was also all my professor - Cynthia Bland - raved about!

This park brought out the inner child in me - it was like a huge playground allowing your imagination to run wild. The property itself was beautiful and unique too and even shared in its showing of art. The homework assignment we had for it was also one of my most memorable.

We - again - had to find a piece of artwork in the park and reflect on it. I chose a piece called Rivers. It was a wooden shed at the edge of a pond that held jars full of various river waters that came from all across Scotland and the UK. It was a connecting piece for anyone who came to visit and also stored a lot of history in it. The area was so calm and serene there that you could reflect and find the deeper meaning behind the water and the stories they hold.

It reminded me of home - Minnesota the land of 10,000 lakes. And also of the Minnesota Wild Hockey team. Their ice rink is made out of lake and pond water from across MN that people bring in and it acts as a icon and reflecting piece for the team and the state.

The rest of our day was spent back at the castle as we had rain coming in - again. So please, enjoy the pictures of Jupiter Artland and let you mind run free.
